About this book
Roman Mosaics gathers chapters that had appeared in magazines and reviews, with considerable changes and additions, according to its preface. The account of the pillar of the Immaculate Conception describes statues of Moses, David, Isaiah and Ezekiel, accompanied by texts from Scripture. The criticism calls the monument heavy and graceless as a work of art, with hard mechanical lines and a figure entirely lacking merit.
The account of an obelisk in the Piazza del Popolo describes a monument about eighty feet high, carved with hieroglyphics. The obelisk's platform has four marble Egyptian lions, one at each corner, pouring streams of water from their mouths into large basins. The explanation says lions in Egypt were regarded as symbols of the sun passing through Leo when the annual inundation of the Nile occurred.
