Wanderings in Spain is by Théophile Gautier, and its contents list chapters titled From Paris to Bordeaux and From Bordeaux to Vergara. A church is described as divided into five naves, the middle one being of the most unusual height. Eighty-eight pillars, each as large as a tower and composed of sixteen spindle-shaped columns bound together, sustain the weight of the enormous edifice.

The writer says that to attempt to describe, one after the other, all the riches of the cathedral would be an absurd piece of folly, and that it would require a whole year to see it thoroughly. Paintings by Murillo, Zurbaran, Pierre Campana, Roëlas, Don Luiz de Villegas, the two Herreras, Juan Valdes and Goya completely fill the chapels, sacristies, and chapter-house. The writer says that at Vittoria, Burgos, and Valladolid they had been told that the good danseuses were at Madrid, while in Madrid they are informed the true dancers of the cachuca exist only in Andalusia, at Seville.
