About this book
Karl Baedeker's guide covers travel around the Mediterranean, with sea routes, fares and directions in the manner of a handbook. One sampled passage describes the voyage from Gibraltar to Algiers, naming steamship lines and the Spanish coast, the island of Alborán and the Algerian coast seen on the way. The same passage gives routes between Genoa and Algiers and mentions a view from the Portofino-Kulm.
The guide also describes towns: bazaars with their wares, a clock-tower built in 1870, and a citadel that was originally Spanish and now holds barracks, prisons and government offices. A passage on southern Spain places Andalucía Baja in the basin of the Guadalquivir, with Cordova and Seville on the river. Page references and plan letters point to maps and to other Baedeker volumes.
