About this book
War Brides is a play in one act set in a country described as war-ridden. Women of different social ranks carry grapes and wood or stack grain, while bugles, drums and marching soldiers accompany the anxiety and excitement of war. Amelia brushes off hay and secretly begins packing a bag for herself. The mother carries a heavy load of wood and chops kindling, refusing an offer of help because the work keeps her from worrying.
Hoffman reports hearing that discouraging women from marrying and questioning authority could be treated as treason. Hedwig asks the captain to take a message to the emperor.
