About this book

In the Shadow of the Glen is by J. M. Synge. The text gives it as a play in one act, first performed at the Molesworth Hall, Dublin, October 8th, 1903. The scene is the last cottage at the head of a long glen in County Wicklow.

The stage directions show a bed with a body lying on it covered with a sheet, while Nora Burke is moving about the room, settling a few things, and lighting candles on the table. A tramp says he is walking to Brittas from the Aughrim fair, and when he looks in past her he sees the dead man. Nora tells the stranger that the man is after dying on her, and that she has a hundred sheep beyond on the hills and no turf drawn for the winter.
