The narrative, set in January 1986, revolves around three siblings - Cash, Fitch, and Bird Nelson Thomas - all in the seventh grade in Park, Delaware.

Each sibling grapples with their own challenges and aspirations. The launch of the Challenger space shuttle serves as a pivotal event in their lives. Their science teacher, Ms. Salonga, inspires her students to experience the launch vicariously. The day of the launch, however, brings about a significant change in their lives.
