About this book

A noisy schoolroom council begins when the children's father decides that only Phil can go to college. Jack tells the story, introducing siblings whose tempers, talents and loyalties keep the household in motion. Felix, who has difficulty walking, excels at languages, writes stories and poems, and paints. His twin Nannie studies alongside him, shares his interest in the violin and helps care for the younger children after their mother's death.

Barbara Yechton builds this children's novel from practical jokes, family arguments and the work of looking after one another. A later scene brings those duties into focus as the children discuss nursing their father while Felix struggles with his own health. The lively dialogue gives readers a close view of how affection and impatience coexist in a large family, and how kindness depends on noticing what someone else can manage.
