About this book
Elias Owen gathered the beliefs of North Wales through conversations with older parish residents and the clergy who knew them. During his years inspecting schools in the Diocese of St. Asaph, he noted local traditions on scraps of paper and later transferred them to notebooks. His preface explains that many accounts came to him in Welsh and that he translated them closely. The collection covers fairies, apparitions, charms and beliefs about animals, preserving stories attached to everyday places and creatures.
A tailor who challenges a church spirit supplies one of the unsettling tales: he hears his own name among those marked for death. Owen then examines beliefs about church doors and the use of bells in funeral processions, drawing on parish records and earlier writers. The book gives readers interested in Welsh folklore a view of both village storytelling and the practical work of collecting it.
