Miscellanies Upon Various Subjects is a book by John Aubrey. The contents list names, among others, Day-Fatality, Omens, Dreams, Apparitions, Voices, Knockings and Corps-candles in Wales. A passage signed John Aubrey, 1696, says that the matter of this collection is beyond human reach, we being miserably in the dark as to the economy of the invisible world.
Under the heading Day Fatality, or Some Observations of Days Lucky and Unlucky, the text says that there be good and evil times, and that the fourteenth day of the first month was a memorable and blessed day amongst the children of Israel. A story marked From the Athenian Mercury says that an apparition told someone to prepare to die and, when at a feast making the thirteenth person in number, to remember its words.
