About this book

The collection presents fables and parables as vehicles for lessons of morality and conceptions of the deity, according to the statement printed on its title page. The account of the Delphians describes a concealed gold cup as the pretext for a charge of sacrilegious theft and a condemnation for a pretended crime.

The moral instruction urges people without an attractive outward appearance to improve their minds, cultivate a good temper and develop agreeable conversation. The moral instruction says that people of sense will readily discover intrinsic worth beneath a rough exterior. The fable headed The Cock and the Fox introduces a fox caught in a springe during an early visit to a farm-yard.
