About this book

The Doraine sails from a South American port on a bright, still morning in October, turning her glistening nose toward the northeast. The ship carries some seven hundred and fifty people and holds filled with grain, foodstuffs, metals, chemicals, rubber, and certain sinister things of war.

Captain Trigger asks the young man why he is aboard as a stowaway, saying that he appears to be a gentleman. An account of growing crops describes the use of fertilizer as an experiment and says the deep, rich alluvial soil was worth tackling. The speaker says oats can be planted on unploughed land, as the speaker’s group has done, and that oats take about ninety days to ripen.
