About this book
A captain's warning about a worn steamer meets a shipping manager's insistence that the vessel must sail. Its boilers and pumps need attention, yet passengers and cattle are booked aboard. Francis Hopkinson Smith builds this short sea story around the gap between the officers' knowledge and the complaints circulating in the smoking room. A struggling actor, a Texas cattle agent and a mother travelling with two children give the danger a human scale.
Much of the tension comes through talk: confident judgments from passengers, guarded exchanges between the captain and engineer, and practical arrangements whose purpose remains unclear to those on deck. The captain's playful dance with a small boy sits beside his private concern over charts and speed.
