About this book
What's-His-Name is credited to George Barr McCutcheon. The contents list names chapters among others titled Our Hero, Miss Nellie Duluth and The Revolver. The chapter headed Our Hero shows two men standing in front of the Empire Theatre on Broadway, discussing themselves in the first person singular.
A man’s thoughts turn to Blakeville, where he and Nellie came from, and where he was somebody while she was merely “that girl of Ted Barkley’s.” A chapter headed Christmas has Mr. Davis saying he could give a man a place at the soda fountain in May, with wages that would of necessity be quite small, owing to the fact that the Greeks had invaded Blakeville with the corner fruit stands and soft-drink fountains. A man named Harvey says his health isn’t what it ought to be and that if he doesn’t get better he may have to go West.
