About this book
Whale Primer is a book on whales with special attention to the California Gray Whale. The contents list headings such as, among others, Significance of Blubber and Inadequate Knowledge of Whales. The text says the whales journey southward just off the shore of southern California and Lower California during January and February.
The text names Cabrillo National Monument as one of the finest locations for viewing the migration, and says the first and only public observatory for whales was established at the monument in 1951. A section headed Shore Habits says that, generally speaking, shallow water is dangerous for the larger whales, other than the gray and right whales. The text calls the stranding of the pilot whale most dramatic because entire groups will come ashore as if afraid to go back to sea. The text says the ratio of marked whales to unmarked whales allows the estimation of the probable size of the whale population.
