About this book
The Moths of the British Isles, First Series describes a moth so variable in colour and markings that some collections devote at least one cabinet drawer to its forms. The treatment of colour and band variations reports that about eighteen colour modifications had already been named and that at least eight band variations had received names. The description of egg-laying states that eggs are deposited singly or in pairs on the undersides of elm or lime leaves.
The Lime Hawk-moth caterpillar is described as green and roughened with yellow points, with seven oblique yellow stripes edged above in purplish and reddish shades. The account of the caterpillar identifies elm and lime foliage as its chief natural food, although alder, birch and other trees and shrubs have been mentioned.
