The volume is titled What Is and What Might Be and is described as a study of education in general and elementary education in particular. The preface says its aim in writing the book is to show that the prevalent tendency to pay undue regard to outward and visible results and to neglect what is inward and vital is the source of most of the defects that vitiate Education in this country. The text says the Universe is conceived of as divided into two dissevered worlds, the world of Nature and the Supernatural world.
The text says the Utopian child differs widely and deeply from the less fortunate child who has to attend a more ordinary type of elementary school. The text says that self-loss, with joy in the loss of self, is, in a word, love.
