About this book
Aristotle and Ancient Educational Ideals by Thomas Davidson has a preface in which the author says he judged it better to trace briefly the whole history of Greek education up to Aristotle. The text gives the maxim Practice first; theory afterwards: do the deed, and ye shall know of the doctrine. The text says the work begun by nature, and continued by habit or exercise, was completed and crowned by instruction.
A speaker addressing Socrates says his wife replied by asking in what way she could coöperate with him. The text cites a work of Teles in which it is said that boys study Letters, Music and Drawing, and young men Arithmetic and Geometry.
