About this book
The Psychology of Arithmetic is by Edward L. Thorndike, Teachers College, Columbia University. The preface says there have been three lines of advance in psychology which are of notable significance for teaching.
The text names a collection meaning of a number, in which each number is a name for a certain sized collection of discrete things such as apples, pennies, boys, balls, and fingers. The text names a ratio meaning, in which two is twice whatever is called one and three is three times whatever is one. On the order of the multiplication table bonds, the text says there is abundant reason to believe that the 5s should be learned first, since they are easier to learn than the 1s or the 2s. The text says that in general the correlation between ability in any one important feature of computation and ability in any other important feature of computation is high.
