About this book

When Love's Labor's Lost by W. C. Tuttle is told in the first person by Ike, whom Magpie Simpkins calls friend Harper. A committee in Piperock wants a lion, to be bought from the circus coming to Granite on the last day of August, and Magpie says Ike will go with him to secure it. Ike grumbles that he does not understand this Labor Day thing and says he will be gone. Jay Bird is going to advance the money.

In one passage a raffle is discussed, with Magpie saying it will not be held until after the fight. In another, the town has a tall stockade built across the street, crowds have come from Yaller Rock County, and Hassayampa Harris of Curlew complains that he spent sixty dollars on chances on the lion and lost all his tickets. A man who ran a shell game for the circus is also sized up by Dirty.
