About this book

This story is told in the first person by Ike Harper, partner of a prospector called Magpie. Ike begins by saying it is no poker story and that he aims to prove a little moral: that honesty is the best policy and that wisdom is no better a hand than luck. He talks in a frontier voice, spelled the way he says it.

He and Magpie leave Piperock for Whispering Crick, about eighty miles away, and find gold right where the pay streak could not possibly be. Magpie files the claim, the Golden Hunch, with forty acres, but the creek lies lower than the rich ground and too far from it. In another passage Ike asks whether Magpie gave away the pistol that was his only birthday present, and the partners tumble off the steps in a scuffle. In a third, a sheriff and a forest ranger arrive asking after a tall dark man and his short, graying partner.
