About this book
Why Go to College? is an address by Alice Freeman Palmer, formerly President of Wellesley College. The address quotes a successful lawyer in a great city who says, “For the two boys it is not so serious, but I lie down at night afraid to die and leave my daughters only a bank account.” The address says it is not true that all girls should go to college any more than that all boys should go, but that it is nevertheless true that they should go in greater numbers than at present.
The author says she wishes to discuss the larger gifts of the college life, what they may be, and for whom they are waiting. The address describes one young woman who has taken art and another who can earn her living, if need be, by her exquisite jellies, preserves, and sweetmeats. The author recalls a superb girl of twenty hurrying along Commonwealth Avenue one winter morning. The address calls consecrated serviceableness the supreme test of life.
