The book is titled William Blake, subtitled A Study of His Life and Art Work, and is by Irene Langridge. The preface says the writer became deeply interested in William Blake and became familiar with all that public collections in London contain of his art-work. The preface adds that a short book might well be written to serve as a pointer to our national Blake treasures.
The text says Blake was finally apprenticed to Basire, a sound craftsman, but of a somewhat hard and dry manner. The text says the Songs of Experience are pitted like a dark contrast against the Songs of Innocence, with pairs that include, among others, the Lamb and the Tiger, and Infant Joy against Infant Sorrow. The text notes numerous copies which the artist made from prints of Michael Angelo’s frescoes on the roof of the Sistine, from drawings after the antique, and from Cumberland’s “Designs for Engravings”.
