About this book
Winds of Rebellion, by Ernest Haycox, carries the subtitle In the Dungeon of the Prison Ship. Its contents list eight chapters, from The Black Frigate Tavern and Over the River to The Prison Ship, Escape and Blade and Blade. The first chapter opens in a hut shaken by a storm, where young Jeffry Peale sits by a lantern before an open copy of Grotius and annotates certain passages.
In another passage Peale walks through slush past a guard-house to a crowded tavern, where officers of every uniform sit about, the Connecticut and Maryland men keeping each to their own kind, and he finds Priam Lafferty alone in a corner. Aboard the ship, Sharon Eastman whispers to him to play a lone fiddle and avoid general mutiny, while six men he rode with on the barge hope he will take the lead.
