About this book
Shadows of Shasta has a contents list of chapter titles, among others Mount Shasta, Twenty Carats Fine and Man-Hunters. A short verse speaks of Sierra's peaks that serenely sit and challenge heaven's sentry-stars. A passage asks the reader to think of the Cheyennes last year, who had tried to escape from the Reservation and reach their homes through the deep snow. One speaker says, "In that little box are the bones of my son; I have tried to take them back to be buried with our fathers."
A boy thanks Carrie for a pretty song and asks what can keep Forty-nine so long. One passage says its brief sketch is about all there is to tell of the young man who lay dead in chains, in the prison-pen of the Reservation. The Doctor says, "Civilization kills the Indian," after he had examined the dead bodies.
