About this book

Wisdom and Destiny is by Maurice Maeterlinck, translated by Alfred Sutro. The introduction says that the essay was to have been a thing of some twenty pages, the work of a fortnight, but that the idea took root, others flocked to it, and the volume has occupied M. Maeterlinck continuously for more than two years. The text says the book is truly a faithful mirror of the man's own thoughts, and feelings, and actions.

A passage says that before giving, we should try to acquire, for this last is a duty from which we are not relieved by the fact of our giving. The text says that, go where we will, the plentiful river of life flows on beneath the canopy of heaven, and that it flows between prison walls where the sun never gleams on its waters.
