About this book
Within the Nebula is by Edmond Hamilton. The narrator stands at the controls beside a silent steersman who raises his hand to point forward and says Canopus at last. A single mighty gleaming spire becomes visible against the distant horizon and grows into a colossal tower all of two thousand feet square at its base. The ship slants down toward the tower's base, which is called the seat of the great Council of Suns itself.
Two guards raise their weapons and motion toward a shaft, and the narrator steps to the edge, grasps the highest peg and swings over the edge and down. The narrator names Jor Dahat and the plant-man Sar Than, who swung easily down by grasping the pegs with all of his four limbs. The narrator wields the great ax in blow after blow at a thick length of metal, and sees a sudden resistless wave of the nebula-creatures pour up from the shaft and force two companions back.
