About this book
Women of the Romance Countries is Volume VI of Woman, by John R. Effinger of the University of Michigan. The preface says no one can deny the influence of woman, which has been a potent factor in society, directly or indirectly, ever since the days of Mother Eve.
Matilda is described as never strong physically, but possessed of remarkable vitality and an iron will. A woman's representation of the character of Medea, in Simon Mayer's opera by that name, has been called the "grandest lyric impersonation in the records of art." The great actor Talma is quoted as saying, "Here is a woman of whom I can still learn." The text says that for the rest of this eighteenth century in Spain there is no predominating woman's influence such as there had been for so many years before.
