In World of the Drone by Robert Abernathy, Dworn knew that if his machine failed him in battle he would die. The introductory line says that men fought each other viciously, with no bond of brotherhood. A beetle wakes from a dreamless sleep as the sunset's last glow fades and stars spring out in the clear desert sky.
Dworn could not even be sure that he would find his sworn enemies beyond the Barrier, but the duty of vengeance was all he had left to live for. The spider girl is commanded to find the route by which her people had descended, yet twice they had missed the way and arrived at dead ends. The queen ships do not depend on the nerve-center of the hive that spawned them, since each carries the full-grown robot brain, the nucleus of a new hive.
