Leah Johnson’s “You Should See Me in a Crown” is a young adult novel that introduces us to Liz Lighty. Liz feels out of place in her small, wealthy, prom-obsessed Midwestern town due to her race, economic status, and awkwardness.

Her escape plan involves attending the prestigious Pennington College, joining their famous orchestra, and pursuing a medical career. When her financial aid falls through, she decides to compete for the prom queen title, which comes with a scholarship. The competition becomes more tolerable when she meets Mack, a fellow outsider and queen candidate. The book delves into themes of identity, love, and overcoming challenges.
