About this book

A dedication recalling childhood heroes introduces Stephen Vincent Benét's 1918 collection of American verse. The opening poem moves from the glowing jars of a shop to a tale of a fisherman who releases a formidable genie. Rich colours, changing rhythms and a song within the story give this imagined encounter its shape. The contents also range across school, city life, music, landscapes and portraits of children.

The middle excerpt shows a sharper dramatic voice at a lavish meal hosted by Alexander VI, where talk of art and hospitality carries a dangerous undertone. In another poem, a speaker wrestles with temptation and the doubts that follow a hard struggle. Chauncey Brewster Tinker's foreword argues for melody, beauty and continuity with earlier poetry. Readers interested in how narrative verse and personal reflection sit together can find both modes in this early collection.
