About this book

For Amy Lowell, writing verse requires the same patient training as making a chair. Her preface to this 1914 collection explains how a poem takes shape through rhythm, images and the speaking voice. She discusses French influences, experiments with unrhymed cadence, and forms that move between prose and verse. The opening poem then turns those concerns into a scene: a frustrated writer walks through a cold city at twilight and meets an elderly stranger who asks for help.

The collection ranges from brief poems to longer verse narratives. In the middle excerpt, Max Breuck declares his love for Christine, marries her and sets out beside a canal to confront Grootver about his plans. Moonlight, flowers and anxious speech make the scene both tender and uneasy. Readers interested in American and Imagist poetry can follow how Lowell uses concrete sights, sounds and changes of rhythm to give emotion a visible setting.
