About this book
Zoraida, subtitled A Romance of the Harem and the Great Sahara, is a book by William Le Queux. A chapter headed Ali Ben Hafiz opens by calling the adventure strange and the mystery inexplicable. The narrator says he was riding with all speed in order to overtake a caravan, far beyond the Atlas mountains, under the fiery rays of the African sun. The narrator says the rope pulled harder, that the water poured upon it was shrinking it, and that the distance between his face and the fangs of his black enemy was gradually being lessened.
The text says the nomads of the Ennitra, who had long been hunted in vain by the Algerian soldiers, were asleep. The narrator says that if Zoraida still lived, he might, after all, be enabled to carry out her extraordinary commission. The narrator says he stood at the window, hopeless and despondent, gazing out upon the splendid, cloudless night.
