About this book
The introductory note says the general situation and many events are based on historical facts, while the fictional characters are wholly imaginative and portray no actual persons. Ali likes all camels but reserves his love for the dromedary, the riding camel that Ali calls the dalul. Ali approaches a stubborn camel and whispers into its ear while holding the tether rope; the camel rises and begins licking Ali's hand.
The interpreter conveys Lieutenant Porter's question about whether Ali will go to America with the camels. Ali finds that, when reduced to packing water, the people whose need is most desperate are almost never able to pay. Ali leads his herd far into a meadow on the Gila where the original seven had been found, turns Ben Akbar, and leaves at top speed.
