—Ah! reprit Brunille en l'apercevant, Bernard, tu es perdu… Mon père me suit, je lui ai tout dit… Sauve-toi!

Pâle, le verrier regardait d'un air exaspéré Gérard qui était resté dans la cour, et Brunille qui se tordait les mains. Tout à coup celle-ci tourna la tête du côté du talus qui dominait le mur et poussa un grand cri. Au même moment deux coups de fusil partaient de la lisière, Bernard du Tremble pirouetta sur lui-même et alla tomber la face dans les herbes du pavé.

Des bûcherons, attirés par les détonations et par les cris de Brunille, accoururent et aidèrent Gérard à relever le verrier. Le charbonnier n'avait pas manqué son coup; Bernard avait une balle au cœur et une balle dans la tête, et on ne ramassa qu'un cadavre.

Gérard ramena Véronique à Saint-Gengoult.—Aujourd'hui ils sont mariés et vivent au Doyenné avec madame La Faucherie.

Le Four-aux-Moines est redevenu désert; je l'ai visité l'an passé, à l'automne, et je n'ai plus trouvé qu'une ruine.
