[1] Timsah existait encore il y a peu de temps et montrait

avec orgueil le certificat que Champollion le jeune lui

avait donné.

 

[2] Un de ces deux obélisques a été apporté à Paris et

dressé sur la place de la Concorde.

 

[3] A Bém-Hassan-el-Qadim, dans le tombeau du nommé

Roteï (c'est l'hypogée composé d'une seule chambre rectangulaire, ornée dans le fond de deux rangées de trois

colonnes, et dont la porte regarde à l'ouest et la vallée de

l'Égypte), on remarque sur la paroi méridionale un

enfoncement régulièrement taillé comme pour une

armoire, et c'est dans l'épaisseur de cet enfoncement que

j'ai trouvé écrite au charbon, et presque effacée, cette

inscription bien simple: 1800. 3e RÉGIMENT DE

DRAGONS. Je me suis fait un devoir de repasser

pieusement ces traits à l'encre noire avec un pinceau, en

ajoutant au-dessous: J.F.C. RST. 1825 (J.-F. Champollion

restituit).

 

[4] L'évènement a prouvé combien les prévisions de

Champollion le jeune étaient justes.
