Au moment où tu recevras cette lettre, mon cher Julien, j'aurai quitté la France. Dans très-peu de jours, je serai à Rome et j'y prendrai le voile au couvent de la Trinita-dei-Monti. Depuis bien des années c'était un projet arrêté dans mon esprit; mais Dieu a toujours envoyé sur mon chemin quelqu'un de plus malheureux que moi à secourir, de plus chancelant à fortifier. Maintenant je crois avoir acquis le droit de songer à mon repos. Tu es heureux; tu vas épouser la femme que tu aimes. Je n'ai plus rien à faire ici-bas. Si tu as une fille, appelle-la Aurélie. Ce nom, je vais le quitter comme le dernier anneau qui m'attache à un monde dont je ne dois plus me souvenir. Écris-le en caractères ineffaçables dans ton coeur, et qu'il y rappelle toujours une affection qui fut sans partage et sans bornes. Adieu, Julien.
