Adam Shoalts
Adam Shoalts brings the skills of a historian, archaeologist, geographer, and field explorer to stories about remote Canada. The Whisper on the Night Wind follows his investigation of a century-old wilderness legend near Traverspine, an abandoned settlement by Labrador's Mealy Mountains. Shoalts does not accept reports of strange tracks, cries, and unidentified creatures as a simple campfire tale; he traces historical accounts and then travels into the region with fellow explorer Zach Kruzins. Penguin Canada released this account in 2021; a paperback followed in 2022. Its method reflects Shoalts's wider career: archival curiosity tested against difficult travel on the ground. He holds a PhD from McMaster University and has carried the Royal Canadian Geographical Society flag on numerous expeditions. The Society named him an Explorer-in-Residence in 2018. Across this book and journeys such as his nearly 4,000-kilometre Arctic traverse, Shoalts treats landscape as both evidence and an active force in the story.
