Alexa Adams writes Austenesque fiction that tests how altered circumstances might redirect familiar characters. The Ladies of Norland belongs to her Twisted Austen project and begins from a changed premise in Sense and Sensibility: the Dashwood women are not forced to leave Norland after Mr. Dashwood’s death. Elinor and Marianne consequently face a different set of pressures, relationships, and possible futures while retaining the family dynamics readers recognize from Jane Austen’s novel. Adams first presented the story during her annual Halloween event in 2020, publishing it in parts before releasing the completed work. She has described Twisted Austen as a place for darker or less conventional variations, distinct from her longer novels such as Being Mrs. Bennet and The Madness of Mr. Darcy. The Ladies of Norland shows that method in compact form. Rather than merely modernizing Austen, Adams changes one material condition and follows the consequences through the Dashwood household, making adaptation itself the story’s central experiment.
