Brain stimulation research paid the bills before fiction did. Ali Hazelwood was born and raised in Italy, lived in Japan and Germany, and moved to the United States for a doctorate in neuroscience; she held a professorship and published peer-reviewed papers until she left the university in 2022 to write full time. The Love Hypothesis began as Star Wars fan fiction posted online in 2018, was reworked for print, and spent more than forty weeks on the New York Times list after its September 2021 release. Most of what followed sits inside a laboratory or a university department: Love on the Brain, and the three novellas Under One Roof, Stuck with You and Below Zero, later gathered as Loathe to Love You. Check & Mate moved the same setup to competitive chess for younger readers, and Bride (2024) traded the campus for vampires and werewolves.
