A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Allan Esler Smith moved from co-author to sole author of The Good Retirement Guide: Frances Kay's name stood beside his on the editions from 2014 to 2018, and the 2019 guide is his alone. The 2019 edition, the guide's thirty-third, came from Kogan Page and works through pensions, tax, property, investment, health, leisure and paid work after sixty, written for British readers under British rules. Smith runs his own chartered accountancy practice advising on start-ups, accounts and tax, and has since brought out a separate annual series of his own, Retirement Planning Expert. Away from the figures he works to keep the Irish film director Brian Desmond Hurst in view, contributing the foreword to Hurst on Film 1928-1970, edited by Caitlin Smith and Stephen Wyatt.
