Tobias has been revising The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need since 1978, and the advice has barely shifted: clear the credit card first, buy index funds, ignore anyone selling a system, and remember that a dollar not spent beats a dollar earned because nobody taxes it. He took an MBA at Harvard and served as treasurer of the Democratic National Committee from 1999 to 2017. Under the name John Reid he had already published The Best Little Boy in the World in 1973, an account of growing up gay that he did not attach his own name to for the better part of twenty years.
