Condie taught secondary school English in Utah and in upstate New York before publishing, and the Matched trilogy grew out of a single question about who decides whom you marry: a Society that arranges every pairing, a girl shown two faces on her match screen, and the slow business of working out what that error means. Matched, Crossed and Reached ran through the peak of the dystopian boom. The Darkdeep, a middle-grade horror series, is written with Brendan Reichs. Summerlost is quieter, set around a Shakespeare festival in a small town, and took an Edgar for young readers.
