Amaury Dreher is a French photographer and writer and his fiction draws on travel, landscape, and places marked by historical catastrophe. Opalescence, also presented as Opalescence: The Secret of Pripyat, is a psychological thriller set in Ukraine’s Chernobyl exclusion zone. Its protagonist, a former refugee from the disaster, returns to confront memories and a past buried within the abandoned territory. Dreher describes the book as suspenseful noir fiction, with the return to Pripyat becoming a search for identity as well as an encounter with danger. The novel appeared in French as Opalescence: Le secret de Pripyat and was independently published in 2019. Dreher’s photographic practice gives particular relevance to the book’s attention to ruined spaces, atmosphere, and visual memory. Opalescence uses a location known worldwide for nuclear disaster without reducing it to scenery. Instead, the exclusion zone becomes a force within the narrative, testing what the returning character remembers, what he has avoided, and whether revisiting a damaged place can provide understanding rather than closure.
