Her earlier novel, Nothing But Sky, centers on a barnstorming pilot in the years following World War I. Across a Broken Shore continues her interest in historically grounded young women pursuing demanding paths, connecting Willa's personal choices to changing medical work and the pressures of Depression-era life.
