Sonny's Blues is a short story by James Baldwin, first published in 1957. The narrator is an unnamed Black high school algebra teacher in Harlem who reads in the newspaper that his younger brother Sonny has been arrested on a drugs charge. The brothers have been estranged for years, and the story follows how the narrator slowly comes to understand Sonny, his music and the suffering that connects them. It ends in a jazz club, where Sonny plays the piano and his brother finally listens. The story deals with family, addiction and the way art can carry pain, and is among the most widely taught American short stories.
