Andrea Eames draws on a Zimbabwean childhood in the setting and sensory detail of her debut, The Cry of the Go-Away Bird. The novel follows Elise, a young white girl whose childhood on a farm unfolds during Zimbabwe’s political upheaval around the turn of the millennium. As trust erodes among neighbors and violence approaches the family’s protected world, Elise’s limited understanding exposes both her vulnerability and inherited assumptions. Harvill Secker published the book in 2011; Vintage issued the paperback the next year. Eames uses a candid first-person voice rather than an explanatory historical overview, allowing Shona language, wildlife, school life, and household relationships to establish the country through daily experience. The Cry of the Go-Away Bird draws on the author’s Zimbabwean childhood without being presented as autobiography. Its coming-of-age structure places political change beside intimate losses through which a child learns to see power and inequality. Readers encounter a personal viewpoint on a nation under strain.
