Andreas Eschbach is a German writer known for science fiction and speculative thrillers. Das Jesus Video begins with an archaeological discovery in Israel: an ancient grave contains instructions for a camera that has not yet been manufactured, suggesting a journey into the past and a recording connected with Jesus. Schneekluth first published the novel in 1998, and a later Lübbe edition under the hyphenated title Das Jesus-Video became a bestseller. The book received the 1999 Deutscher Science Fiction Preis and was adapted for German television. Eschbach studied aerospace engineering and later worked in software. His fiction regularly builds large ethical or historical questions around a single technological premise, as seen in novels such as The Carpet Makers and Lord of All Things.
