Andy Remic wrote loud, fast, violent adventure fiction for nearly twenty years and made independent films alongside it. The computer games came far earlier: text adventures for the ZX Spectrum, written when he was a boy. Born in Manchester in 1971 to a Yugoslav father and an English mother, he studied at Manchester and Edge Hill and took a doctorate, and taught English in Oldham and later in Lincolnshire; Orbit published his first thriller, Spiral, in 2003. Around twenty more novels followed, spanning military science fiction and grimdark fantasy, and his work appeared in six languages. The Clockwork Vampire Chronicles is an omnibus of three of them, Kell's Legend, Soul Stealers and Vampire Warlords, set in the kingdom of Falanor, where an ageing axeman is hauled back into a war he had walked away from when an albino army crosses the border. For Angry Robot he began a second fantasy sequence, The Rage of Kings. The Iron Wolves sends an old general out to reassemble a company of soldiers thirty years past their best against the sorceress Orlana and her mud-orcs, and The White Towers carries the campaign onward. Remic died of cancer on 26 February 2022, aged 50.
