Anne Reeve Aldrich
Anne Reeve Aldrich was an American poet and fiction writer whose brief career produced lyric collections as well as short stories. The rose of flame, and other poems of love was published by G. P. Putnam’s Sons in 1889 and gathers poems concerned with affection, memory and loss. After Aldrich’s death in 1892, Nadine and Other Poems appeared in 1893, followed by the posthumous fiction collection A Village Ophelia And Other Stories in 1899. Project Gutenberg’s record for the latter volume includes the title story alongside A Story of the Vere de Vere and An African Discovery. Its domestic settings and sharply observed social encounters reveal a narrative counterpart to the emotional concentration of her verse. Contemporary title pages establish the publication forms of the poetry, while later library records document the posthumous volumes. Taken together, these books preserve both sides of a body of work completed before Aldrich reached twenty-seven.
