Annie Heloise Abel was a historian and editor whose scholarship centered Indigenous nations, the trans-Mississippi West, and United States expansion. Published in 1919, The American Indian as Participant in the Civil War became the second volume of her Slaveholding Indians series. Berkeley’s library record documents the title, date, series position, and focus on Indian Territory during the Civil War. The University of Nebraska Press independently describes Abel’s treatment of Pea Ridge, Stand Watie, Cherokee forces, and the devastation the conflict brought to Native communities. Born in England and educated in Kansas, Abel later taught history and carried out archival research. Her book was unusual in making Indigenous political and military participation central rather than incidental to a conventional war narrative. Although later scholarship has revised terminology and interpretation, Abel’s documentary work remains part of the field’s historiography. The American Indian as Participant in the Civil War presents a source-rich study of divided nations, competing alliances, military campaigns, and consequences extending far beyond battlefield victory.
